Fast Fix Friday – Clean Up Your Act

This Fast Fix Friday is not going to focus on food.  I am going to give you a fast fix recipe for making your own laundry detergent.  You are probably asking yourself why in the world would I make my own laundry detergent?  Why would I waste my time?  Well, maybe YOU wouldn’t want to, and that’s totally fine.  Here is why I do.

Laundry detergent is expensive.  I pay about 13 dollars for a gallon of detergent at Sam’s Club.  I can make a gallon with this recipe for around a dollar.  It might not seem like a lot of savings to you, but I would just rather spend my money on things that want and that bring me joy.  Laundry does not bring me joy.  It brings me more joy than say, doing the dishes, but that’s what I have a significant other for (ba da ba).  The cost that I am quoting you is if you are buying everything at full retail.  If you use coupons for the ingredients it could be even more of a cost savings.  Here’s the thing… for a woman who doesn’t find joy in doing the laundry I sure do end up doing a lot of it.  I’m sure you can relate.

You can make this recipe with the fragrance of your choice.  My favorite fragrance is clean cotton.  I like that fresh clean scent.  I get clean cotton candles and wax melts for my home.  I would rather have my home smell fresh and clean rather than like cookies or wood.  That’s just my personal preference.

There is a funny story about my love of clean cotton scent.  I was in TJ Maxx with a couple of friends, and we were just cruising the aisles and looking at everything.  I came across a large bottle of room deodorizer spray that was clean cotton. I was excited and told my friends how much I love the scent.  I went to remove the cap and someone had broken it and put it back on the shelf.  When I removed the cap, which was stuck (now I know why) the concentrated liquid came gushing out, and totally drenched me to the skin.  We had a good laugh over it.  I certainly smelled clothesline fresh for the rest of the evening, like I had went swimming in a vat of liquid Tide.

So anyway, let’s get to the down and dirty details of making this recipe.  The ingredients you will need are Dawn dish-washing liquid, the blue formula, Borax, Arm and Hammer Washing Soda, and fragrance oil of some type.  I get mine on amazon they have a great selection.

First, measure two cups of water into glass bowl, heat it in the microwave until it is very hot, but not boiling.  Into the hot water add 2 tablespoons of the blue dawn, 3 tablespoons each of the Borax and Arm and Hammer.  Stir until the powdered ingredients are totally dissolved.  Put this mixture into your gallon container.  I like to use a funnel for this as it keeps me from spilling the hot soap.  Then, add your fragrance oil.  I’m heavy handed with this part.. surprise, surprise. I don’t really measure.  I just continue to add until I think the intensity is right.  Next, fill the container the rest of the way with cool water.  You might need to do this in stages, because it can start to form bubbles as you add the water to the soap solution.

That is how easy it is.  It takes no time at all to make a gallon, and it works just as well as detergent you buy in the store.  I hope you try this for yourself.  Let me know if you like it as much as I do.  Until next time… stay fresh and as always stay glamorous.

  1. Thank you! I have never seen such an easy laundry detergent recipe with a personal endorsement from someone I trust who actually uses it. I’m heading to Amazon right now for the scent. I’m personally fond of the clean cotton, as well… 🙂
